Introduction:
At this year’s Chroma Art Film Festival (CAFF24), filmmaker and artist Sydney Mills took home the award for Best Music Video with her haunting and visually captivating piece, “In The Mirror.” Known for her dark, introspective style, Mills’ work blends music video artistry with surreal, gothic aesthetics, drawing inspiration from the gothic music scenes of the 70s and 80s. In an exclusive interview, we explored her creative process, inspirations, and journey as an artist.
Mills’ Artistic Journey:
With an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts and a BA in Fine Art from the University of Southern California, Sydney Mills has established herself as an artist and filmmaker who pushes the boundaries of visual storytelling. Her work spans video, photography, and sculpture, and her films have been showcased internationally, including in Austria, Mexico, and South Korea.
Mills’ love for music videos and body horror has been a driving force behind her unique style, crafting narratives that delve into the darker sides of the human experience. In her own words, she explains how her passion for both art and film has led her to merge these two worlds, bringing to life emotionally charged and visually stunning works.
The Making of “In The Mirror”:
In “In The Mirror,” Mills worked with musician Laura Pleasants, formerly of the metal band Kylesa, who now heads the solo project The Discussion. The music video serves as a visual ode to darkwave music, incorporating eerie blue silhouettes, prism effects, and a hauntingly beautiful performance by Pleasants.
Mills describes the creative process for this video as a departure from her previous works. While her usual projects often explore surreal narratives, this video was focused on the performance itself, placing Pleasants’ commanding vocals at the forefront. Through kaleidoscope effects and subtle distortions, Mills crafted a video that reflected both the personal depth of the song and the eerie mood she envisioned.
A Unique Blend of Light and Darkness:
Mills’ artistic vision often walks the line between beauty and darkness. She embraces contrasting elements—light and shadow, beauty and fear—to create pieces that are both visually appealing and emotionally complex. This approach is clear in “In The Mirror,” where she carefully juxtaposes dark, personal themes with stunning visuals.
Pushing Boundaries in Art and Film:
One of Mills’ greatest achievements has been finding the balance between the worlds of art and commercial filmmaking. Initially discouraged from pursuing both fields, she has now found recognition for her ability to merge art with film in a way that elevates both mediums.
As the first winner of CAFF24’s Music Video category, Mills has demonstrated that music videos can transcend the conventional boundaries of art and film, creating a unique space for storytelling, performance, and artistic expression.
Advice for Future Filmmakers:
Mills encourages aspiring artists to remain true to their passion, despite the challenges they may face. Her own journey has been marked by moments of uncertainty, but her dedication to her craft kept her motivated. Her advice to emerging filmmakers is simple yet powerful: “Don’t give up. Create with everything you have, push the boundaries, and remain authentic.”
Looking Ahead:
Sydney Mills continues to explore new projects, blending her love for music videos with her dream of creating a full-length sci-fi film. With each project, she continues to evolve as an artist, breaking new ground in both the art and film industries.
