Introduction:
The 2.5 Urban Initiative celebrates artists who bring urban life to the forefront of their work, turning cityscapes into spaces of reflection, imagination, and transformation. This year’s winners shared their journeys, inspirations, and creative processes, revealing the depth of thought behind their award-winning pieces.
What inspired your winning piece, Grace Between Spaces?
“Grace Between Spaces visualizes the transition between realms, whether mental or physical. It features a woman suspended between spaces, embodying serenity and strength as she floats upward. One foot remains grounded on a swirling, sandy foundation, while she cradles a large pearl—a symbol of wisdom and clarity. The pearl’s water arcs mimic a wing, symbolizing transformation and the fluidity of identity.
This piece came from a personal place. The world feels more uncertain than ever with societal shifts, environmental warnings, and technological advancements happening at breakneck speed. On a personal level, I’m working to adapt and remain steadfast. The figure in this artwork represents the state of mind I strive for—to navigate tumultuous times with grace and composure.”
How do urban environments influence your creative process and themes?
“I love living in the city, but my art often distances itself visually from urban life. It’s a way of finding balance between environments. When I spend too much time in nature or isolation, I long for the city—the crowds, projects, events, and culture (but not the traffic!).
In Miami, inspiration is everywhere. The murals, rich cultural diversity, and the music and aromas that permeate the air are a constant source of creative energy. We’re blessed to be surrounded by expression and art at every turn.”
What was the journey of creating this piece like?
“Most of my pieces begin with loose sketches, allowing intuition to guide the process. It’s like discovering art as it emerges, much like analyzing a dream that initially seems confusing but later reveals meaning. Once the idea was fully realized, I worked to render it in a way that others could connect with.
This artwork was different in that it came together with fewer revisits than usual. Typically, I find myself getting lost in the details—checking anatomy, refining hues, and reworking shading—but with this piece, I felt comfortable moving fluidly between elements. I experimented with complex color palettes to achieve harmony and joyfully distorted the figure’s proportions in an El Greco-inspired style. The process was freeing, and it allowed me to try new visual languages while staying true to my artistic identity.”
How does this piece reflect the spirit of the 2.5 Urban Initiative?
“The 2.5 Urban Initiative introduces art into people’s daily lives in a way that breaks them out of their routine. It’s about creating moments of pause, reflection, or even a brief escape. I hope my artwork offers onlookers a sense of serenity or curiosity as they move through their day.”
How has your art evolved, and what does this piece say about your growth as an artist?
“As I’ve continued creating, I’ve grown more confident in capturing moods and sparking conversations through my work. This piece challenged me, especially when it came to painting transparent, swirling water. While I see areas for improvement, I entered the process with more confidence than I’ve had in the past and am happy with the results.
This piece also stands out because I rarely depict full figures—I usually focus on facial expressions and emotional subtleties. Exploring dynamic movement here felt fresh and exciting.”
What advice would you give to aspiring artists, especially those exploring urban themes?
“I haven’t fully figured myself or my art out, and I think that’s a good thing. Art is a journey, not a race. Urban environments are rich with inspiration, but finding your voice takes time. Experiment with different techniques, explore new subjects, and display your work to see what resonates.
Don’t feel pressured to follow trends—stay authentic. Your unique voice will naturally find its place.”
What are your next steps after this project?
“I’m currently working on a collection called Beyond the Veil, which is pushing me out of my comfort zone. It’s a series of abstract designs that allow me to break free from realism and representation. I’m experimenting with 3D modeling, printing, and a variety of mediums like wood, clay, resins, and metals.
The process itself is exciting—whether I succeed or fail, the exploration is the reward.”
What aspect of the 2.5 Urban Initiative would you carry forward into your future projects?
“I’d love to focus more on art for public spaces. While galleries are incredible venues, they can feel exclusive or hidden from the majority of the public. Public art has the power to reach everyone and create shared moments of reflection or joy.
Whether through murals or other forms of accessible art, I want to create pieces that positively impact the communities they inhabit. Perhaps one day, my work will adorn a street wall near you.”
What does winning the 2.5 Urban Initiative mean to you?
“It’s an incredible honor and a sign that my work is resonating. The 2.5 Urban Initiative is such a meaningful program, allowing artists to decorate their cities with passion and purpose. For me, this is a way to honor the neighborhood where I grew up in the purest form.”
How do you see your role in inspiring the next wave of artists?
“I believe strongly in the power of education. Teaching others how to create art provides them with tools for self-expression, which can be transformative.
Art is therapy—it’s a way to process emotions, explore identity, and connect with the world. I hope to inspire others to find their own voice and use art to share their stories.”
