This week, Chroma Art Film Festival proudly features Mrs. Zhao’s Hat, an evocative cinematic poetry piece by filmmaker and digital artist Dian Wang. The film explores the relationship between simplicity and perception, focusing on a single bamboo hat as a vessel of time, culture, and artistic contemplation.
With a deep appreciation for minimalism and conceptual art, Mrs. Zhao’s Hat removes objects from their conventional context, allowing them to take on new meaning. The film challenges audiences to engage with the subtle poetry of everyday life, transforming the mundane into something profound.
Overview
In the rural landscape of Zhejiang, a simple bamboo hat becomes the centerpiece of this poetic visual meditation. Resting on the grass, its weathered edges and faded bamboo strips reveal a history of use and resilience. Rather than imposing a narrative, Mrs. Zhao’s Hat lets the object speak for itself, inviting audiences to discover beauty in its raw, unembellished form.
The film draws inspiration from the artist’s reflection on creative integrity, rejecting over-explanation and instead embracing presence and perception. Through a minimalist yet striking aesthetic, Mrs. Zhao’s Hat redefines how we see and interact with ordinary objects.

Director Statement
“Through the concept of ‘Fusion,’ I explore the philosophical relationship between the monumental and the intimate. My work integrates traditional Asian art forms with computational techniques, creating visual experiences that challenge how we perceive everyday objects and spaces.
In Mrs. Zhao’s Hat, I strip away context and function to focus on presence and perception. The bamboo hat, an ordinary object, becomes a medium for contemplation. This work does not impose meaning but rather invites the viewer to engage with the essence of form itself. My goal is to create a dialogue between simplicity and complexity, where the smallest details hold the power to transform how we see the world.”
