Miami’s Cultural Future Is on the Line: How You Can Take Action Now

Miami’s Cultural Future Is on the Line

Miami’s identity as a cultural crossroads is under threat. On July 15, the proposed FY 2025–2026 Miami-Dade County budget revealed $12.8 million in cuts to cultural grants, alongside plans to merge the Department of Cultural Affairs into the Public Library System and eliminate the Director of Cultural Affairs position.

If approved in September, these changes will:

  • Defund over 500 cultural organizations
  • Eliminate youth and educational arts programs
  • Disrupt public art, community festivals, and cultural storytelling
  • Threaten the livelihoods of thousands of artists and creative workers

This isn’t just a policy decision—it’s a cultural erasure.

What’s at Stake

  • 🎭 Local Artists & Creatives: Many depend on project grants, residencies, and commissions to survive.
  • 🎓 Youth Programs: After-school creative education, film literacy workshops, and cultural heritage projects are at risk.
  • 🏛 Community Access: Free cultural events, festivals, and artist talks could disappear entirely.

What You Can Do Now

1️⃣ Contact Your Commissioners

  • Call, email, or write to your Miami-Dade County Commissioners.
  • Clearly state why arts funding matters to you and your community.
  • Share personal stories—how have the arts impacted your life?

2️⃣ Spread the Word

  • Share advocacy messages on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and LinkedIn.
  • Use hashtags: #MiamiArts #SaveTheArts #FundTheArts
  • Tag local media outlets to amplify visibility.

3️⃣ Support Arts Organizations Directly

  • Donate to local nonprofits who are on the frontlines.
  • Offer in-kind support—venue space, equipment, software, or professional skills.

4️⃣ Attend Public Meetings

  • Show up at budget hearings and cultural board meetings.
  • Bring friends and neighbors. Numbers matter in advocacy.

5️⃣ Collaborate and Cross-Promote

  • Partner with artists and arts organizations to co-create events.
  • Support joint marketing campaigns to keep the message alive.

Where to Go for Resources

The Bottom Line

This moment calls for collective action. Whether you’re a filmmaker, painter, musician, teacher, or community supporter—your voice matters. The more people who advocate, the harder it becomes for decision-makers to ignore the urgency.

Miami’s culture is not a luxury—it’s our lifeblood. Let’s fight to keep it thriving.
