“As It Concerns Kyiv”
Director: Kate Ryan Brewer
Film: A poetic meditation on time, love, and loss.
Bio: Born in Seattle and raised in Southeast Asia, Kate Ryan Brewer is an independent writer and director. Her first feature film, “Knots: A Forced Marriage Story” is an award-winning documentary about forced and child marriage in the U.S. It’s also the subject of her TEDx Talk.
Kate is a published author, short story writer, and essayist, and she has collaborated on several art and media projects. Most recently, she performed her written piece about being evacuated from Kyiv in 2022 as part of a WordTheatre event in London. She graduated from the Florida State University film school, and she has lived and worked around the world. Kate’s next two features are horror films.
Director Statement: This all started as a poem that I wrote in a Kyiv coffee shop in late January, 2022. We started making this short film before Russia’s heinous February 24 attack on Ukraine. Having been evacuated from Kyiv a couple weeks prior, I wanted to make something in tribute to this beautiful city.
Composed of a blend of iPhone footage of Kyiv and HD visuals filmed in Florida, this short touches on the complexity of a moment in time, as we lived it.
